As majors go, the AIG Women’s British Open was a classic. Hinako Shibuno, the 20 year old Japanese rookie, who had never set foot in a tournament outside of her home country holed, in some style we might add, a 20ft putt on the 18th to secure the title. Just moments before Lizette Salas had missed a much shorter chance in front of an amazing crowd.

The men’s majors are over and so attention turns to the women, or ladies as they were referred to when I was growing up. We have a double header with the Evian Championship in France this week followed straight away by the Women's British Open. And we thought the men were compressing their majors too much!

Cinderella Story!! When 20 year-old Korean Jin-Young Ko turned up for the Ricoh Women's British Open last wek, she didn't have a caddie, so she asked around and the name of Jeff Brighton, a 17 year old local caddie was put forward. And now the young fella has earned just shy of £20,000 (10% of the winner's cheque) with Jin-Young's second place finish.

Two time major winner, and GolfPunk legend John Daly was last night rushed to hospital after collapsing on the 18th tee at Deerfield Golf Club. Daly who placed at No.4 in our Top 50 GolfPunks, was playing a small tournament in Jackson, Mississippi when he had breathing difficulties on the last hole.

Was I surprised to hear that the BBC were going to assign highlights of the Women's Open to the graveyard slot on BBC 2? Not in the slightest. This so-called public broadcasters run by the liberal elite sitting in their ivory towers and spending almost £4 billion of our licence fee dosh deserted golf years ago.

As The Open returns to Royal Portrush after a gap of 68 years we look back at the winner of the 1951 Open, Max Faulkner. An ingenious shot maker and a superb putter, but he’ll be remembered as a sharp-talking fairway dandy and British golf’s first natural showman.

Less than 24 hours after the Evian Championship was wrapped up by Jin Young Ko, 49 of the top 50 women in the world hightailed it to Milton Keynes to somehow prepare themselves for the very different test that Woburn Golf Club’s Marquess Course will offer. Or at least most of them would have been preparing had Lexi Thompson not left her passport in her bag!
