The Open is coming back to Northern Ireland after a break of 68 years. When Max Faulkner, one of the most flamboyant golfers of his generation, won the Open Championship in 1951 at Royal Portrush it would be 18 years until a Brit, Tony Jacklin in 1969, was to do so again.
Most golfers have to splash out on a round of drinks when they score a hole-in-one, but for John Paton any such expense was well worth it, as his ace earned him a trip to the 2020 Ryder Cup.
It didn’t get the same level of criticism as the 2004 event at Shinnecock Hills, but the 2018 US Open was by all objective measure pretty crazy.
