Dame Laura Davies is relishing the opportunity to strike the opening tee shot at Royal Troon and mark her historic 40th appearance at the AIG Women's Open. Ahead of starting proceedings at 6.30am this morning, Davies was presented with an official painting of the famous ‘Postage Stamp’ 8th hole by The R&A’s Chief Executive Martin Slumbers to celebrate the occasion and her longevity.
The Faldo Series made history this week at the Wales Championship with a record-breaking event marking a number of new firsts for Sir Nick Faldo’s global junior golf initiative. All is not lost for Ashton and fellow runners up, who will also be rewarded with invites to the Europe Grand Final come November due to the volume of players validating an extension of the prize. The Faldo Series is set to break its own record of the largest field in its 24-year history next week as 260 junior golfers tee it up across the Vale Resort and Cottrell Park for the Wales Boys & Girls Championship. “We are looking forward to meeting some of the champions of tomorrow and being a part of a historic moment for the Series as it welcomes its largest field at an event to date.”
This week’s Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood marks the beginning of the European Tour’s UK Swing, and former World Number One Westwood enters the week not only as tournament host but also as one of the favourites to take the title. Westwood has been on a strict health regime and has never felt fitter, so he will be a force to be reckoned with at his home course.
IG has today announced its continued commitment to women’s golf by extending its title partnership of the AIG Women’s Open by two years, to 2025. Under the new agreement, the championship will now be known as the AIG Women’s Open as part of a rebrand undertaken by The R&A and AIG.
The R&A confirmed today that it intends to play the AIG Women’s British Open at Royal Troon from 20th to 23rd August without spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be the first women’s Major Championship to be played this year and will be broadcast globally to more than 11 million fans.
The European Tour today confirmed the cancellation of the BMW International Open and the Open de France and the postponement of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, a Rolex Series event, due to the continuing threat posed by the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). At the same time, the PGA Tour announced its plans to resume the 2019-20 season with the Charles Schwab Challenge between 11th and 14th June.
