A trio of gains from the 13th took her to five-under-par before a 10ft putt on the 17th took her to six. The birdies are important but sometimes it is the pars that matter most.
Sophia Popov continued her love for Royal Troon as she opened up a commanding three-stroke lead heading into the final round of the AIG Women’s Open. American duo Austin Ernst and Lindsey Weaver, helped by a miraculous chip in for par at the 12th, are two shots further back in a tie for fourth place at one-over-par, alongside another German, Caroline Masson.
It was gripping stuff coming down the stretch as Justin Thomas saw off the challenge of defending champion Brooks Koepka at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational. Two huge slices of luck assisted Thomas at the 15th and 16th holes, both of which he birdied and held his nerve as Koepka stumbled on the last.
Despite dropping three shots in her last three holes, Gabriella Cowley held on to win the fifth Rose Ladies Series event at the JCB Golf and Country Club. She carded an excellent two-under-par round of 70 to win by one shot from a group on one-under that included Charley Hull and Georgia Hall. Charley Hull crushed local girl and event organiser Liz Young’s dreams of a home course victory when she holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the first extra. Sadly there were no spectators at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club in the New Forest to witness the exciting climax to the first Rose Ladies Series event.
