Europe take a slender lead into day two of the 16th Solheim Cup at Gleneagles. After Europe took the morning foursomes by a score of 2½ matches to 1½, an exciting rollercoaster of an afternoon ended in the fourball matches being shared to leave Europe with an overall lead by 4½ matches to 3½.
The players in the afternoon fourballs are on the back nine. The target time for the matches is four and half hours and they are on five hours and forty-five-minute pace. It seems that the men’s game is not the only one plagued by slow play problems.
The Solheim Cup is, without doubt, the biggest event on the Women’s Golf Calendar. However the debate about whether Women’s golf is doing enough to inspire young girls to get some clubs and head to the range remains shadowed by a large grey cloud that looms heavily over the game. Ok as nobody else seems to be doing it, I am going to come out and defend the seemingly indefensible, or at the very worst add a bit of perspective. Hank Hainey made a pretty unwise statement and was clearly mistaken in taking what might be described as ‘locker room humour’ to the airways. But, was he being ‘racist, xenophobic, and sexist’ as stated by the PGA Tour’s lawyers?
We were all on the edge of our seats when Suzann Pettersen holed that six foot putt to win the Solheim Cup. Now Gleneagles are bringing back their offer to allow us ordinary folk to play that course, or one of the other two, for the princely sum of £201.90. Better hurry as we assume it may go up to £202.00 come January!
