Andy Sullivan cruised to a commanding home victory at the English Championship, the former Ryder Cup player claiming his fourth European Tour title and his first in five years in the process.
Andy Sullivan took a one shot lead after round two of the English Championship, firing a nine-under par round of 62 as the sun shone on Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel and Country Club. South African Dean Burmester matched Sullivan’s back nine 28 in a round of 63 that left him a shot off the lead alongside another Englishman in Laurie Canter, who recorded a 65.

It was gripping stuff coming down the stretch as Justin Thomas saw off the challenge of defending champion Brooks Koepka at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational. Two huge slices of luck assisted Thomas at the 15th and 16th holes, both of which he birdied and held his nerve as Koepka stumbled on the last.

Italian Renato Paratore produced a dominate display of front running to claim his second European Tour title with a three shot victory in the Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood at Close House. The 23-year-old converted his one stroke overnight advantage with a two-under par final round of 69 to finish on 18 under par, with Denmark’s 19-year-old Rasmus Højgaard runner up on 15 under.
This week’s Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood marks the beginning of the European Tour’s UK Swing, and former World Number One Westwood enters the week not only as tournament host but also as one of the favourites to take the title. Westwood has been on a strict health regime and has never felt fitter, so he will be a force to be reckoned with at his home course.
Despite dropping three shots in her last three holes, Gabriella Cowley held on to win the fifth Rose Ladies Series event at the JCB Golf and Country Club. She carded an excellent two-under-par round of 70 to win by one shot from a group on one-under that included Charley Hull and Georgia Hall. Talented English junior golfers, Corey Neville and Ellen Hume, have won the first events of the 2020 Faldo Series Europe calendar, securing their places at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club for the Europe Grand Final in November. Gemma Dryburgh won for a second consecutive week on the Rose Ladies Series at Royal St, George’s in Kent. The 27-year-old from Scotland shot an excellent one-under-par 69 to win by a shot from tour stars Georgia Hall and Charley Hull. The series now moves to the JCB Country Club in Staffordshire next week and will conclude with a three-course grand final in Surrey beginning on 5th August.
Padraig Harrington summed it up well a while back when he said the players "might have to take one for the team". The problem is it became clear that many of the players were not prepared to 'take one' as he put it and the lack of an adoring crowd became the deciding factor.
