Primary School Gets It's Own 9 Hole Course

Doing it for the kids

You can’t get the kids playing golf too young. Tiger started playing golf before he was two. Rory Mcilroy had an awesome swing at three. So it’s good to see that this primary school in West Bromwich is trying to get them hooked early.

A nine hole Tri-Golf course has been installed in the playing field at Lyng Primary School, one of the first schools to add golf to it’s curriculum. The course was built after £1,500 funding from the Golf Foundation and HSBC.

The nine-hole course has taken up a third of the playing field at Lyng Primary School, which is one of the first in the Black Country to incorporate golf into their curriculum. It was built following a £1,500 funding bid from the golf foundation and HSBC.

Introducing golf to the school was the idea of deputy head teacher Peter Staniland.

“The golf course is multi-purpose as we can use it for PE but also children can write about their time with it in English lessons too, so it is helping all aspects of learning.

We’ve got to applaud this effort to grow the game. Golf is so hard to learn as an adult so it’s great to try and catch the kids early. Especially as there will be kids playing who would never have had any involvement with the game if they hadn’t been handed a club at school. Who knows, this kind of scheme could unleash the next Tiger or Rory.
