Jeunghun Wang wins in Qatar

Holds off Lagergren and Van Zyl

Jeunghun Wang has held off the challenge of Jaco Van Zyl and Joakim Lagergren to win the Qatar Masters, and his third European Tour title.

South Korean Wang started the day with a three–shot lead and while his playing partner Jaco Van Zyl cut that to one after a fast start, a bogey from the South African on the sixth gave Wang a cushion.

But the trademark high winds that had stayed away for most of the week in the desert began to pick up at the turn, for what would prove to be a thrilling finish.

Wang’s two shot cushion was not to survive on the back nine, as he dropped a shot on the 14th. He fought back with a birdie on the par 4 16th, which regained him the lead. But another bogey on the par 3 17th put him into a play off with Joakim Lagergren and Jaco Van Zyl.

He took a bold line on the first play off hole, the 18th, and got up and down from the back of the green to snatch a birdie and the victory.

This is his second play off victory as his first European Tour win came at the 2016 Trophee Hassan II in Morocco, where he was playing on a sponsor’s invitation. He beat Nacho Elvira on the second extra hole of a sudden–death playoff.
