Quinta Do Peru is the biggest climber in Portuguese rankings

In new leading courses rankings

Quinta do Peru was the biggest Portuguese winner after the highly regarded layout jumped an impressive six places to 13th spot in the Leading Courses Top 25 Courses rankings – twice as much as the next best climber.

Part of the ORIZONTE – Lisbon Golf group, the highly acclaimed 18-hole venue was the most successful mover from all the country’s courses reviewed in the coveted Best Course in Portugal list, run by top Dutch website Leadingcourses.com.

All Portuguese golf clubs are included on the Leadingcourses.com system, among nearly 25,000 courses in 139 countries. The site – which is used by more than 350,000 golfers each month – is available in nine languages, reaching around 92 per cent of European golfers in their mother tongue.

ORIZONTE commercial director José Maria Cazal Ribeiro said: “Quinta do Peru has long been a favourite for golfers from across Europe over the years, but its popularity and standing continues to grow with every year and that is evident with yet another climb up the rankings.

“To move up six places to 13th is a fantastic achievement for everyone at ORIZONTE, especially as we are competing with some of the finest courses in Portugal. Quinta do Peru is certainly well respected, but it also represents incredible value. We are certainly happy with the achievement but will continue to try to improve that further for the next rankings.”

The Quinta do Peru course, which is just a 30-minute drive from the capital, is one of seven courses run through management group ORIZONTE, and is also ranked 17th in Portugal on the respected Top 100 Golf Courses website.

The Rocky Roquemore-designed layout – host of several European Challenge Tour events since it opened in 1994 – winds its way through the rich and verdant pines of the Arrábida Natural Park and provides an exciting but challenging 6,640-yard test, with astute bunkering and true-rolling, quick greens that offer an honest examination of any putting stroke.

Orizonte’s portfolio of excellent value courses is made up of six other highly acclaimed layouts within the Lisbon region. Aroeira I and II are just 25km from the city, with both captivating layouts cutting through a dense pine forest in the Setabul Peninsula.

Ribagolfe I and II are two picturesque courses set in a native cork forest, with the former a host to the European Tour Qualifying School over the last decade and regarded as the ‘Valderrama of Portugal’.

Orizonte’s award-winning portfolio is completed with the Donald Steel-designed Santo Estêvão, a par-73 course over 72 hectares set in the fertile rolling landscape of the Northern Alentejo region, as well as Oeiras – a nine-hole course on the doorstep of one of the most important business centres in Portugal and 10 minutes from the bustling streets of Lisbon.
