Rock misses out on 59 Club

But takes lead at Irish Open

Robert Rock of England came close to being only the second man to shoot 59 on the European Tour. After a string of five consecutive birdies Rock had an eagle chance at the 18th hole at Lahinch to achieve the historic landmark. His long putt from the edge of the green went agonisingly close but missed on the left, leaving Rock to tap in for his sixth consecutive birdy, a back nine of 29 and a third round 60.

Use the Force young Robert!

The Englishman sits on thirteen under par and will take a one shot lead in to the final round of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. One shot back are fellow Englishman Eddie Pepperell and Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello. A further shot back is the Zander Lombard who led the field going in to the third round.

Oliver Fisher remains the only man to have shot the magic 59 on the European Tour and Rock joins some 20 other golfers who have shot 60. Fisher’s twelve under par 59 came at the Portugal Masters in 2018.

It has been a while since Rock, who sits at number 333 in the world, has featured in an event. He recently failed to qualify for The Open but now has a very good chance of securing a berth at Royal Portrush. Three slots are available for those finishing in the top 10 and not already qualified.
