Golf Spiv calls the US Open

Here are his runners and riders for the week

The U.S Open is finally here and we are in for a treat. Erin Hills looks tough on paper and follows in the USGA’s desire to use the hardest courses in the United States. Built in 2006 the course has already hosted the U.S Amateur championships. It presents an issue for those looking to bet on the U.S Open, after all, we have no data as to how well players have performed in the past. One thing we have learned though is the need for accuracy.

Kevin Na has already highlighted what a tough track Erin Hills can be. His Instagram video showed the troubles that await at the U.S Open. Throwing his ball into the fescue his proved that any stray shot will be swallowed up. For this reason, we know that accuracy will be the key to winning the U.S Open at Erin Hills.

With the top four players struggling either with form or injuries it means that the field is ripe for those looking for great odds. Dustin Johnson starts as the favourite at 8/1 but there are plenty of solid players who have a great chance. So without further ado, here is who the Spiv is backing at this year’s U.S Open.

Justin Rose: 28/1 (BetFred)

Hailed as one of the best tee–to–green players out there it was his putting that proved to be damaging to his chances. However, Rose appears to have put that behind him following a strong showing at Augusta. He now looks like a complete player and could add a second U.S Open to the one he won back in 2013.

Thomas Pieters: 55/1 (BetFred)

Pieters showed he was ready for the big occasion with a fourth place finish at The Masters. Of the nine tournaments he played in 2017 he has made three top tens including his 2nd place at the Genesis Open. The world number 25 has had a bit of time off since Wentworth and should be strong here.

Alex Noren: 66/1 (188Bet)

A missed cut at the Masters has been followed by success at the BMW PGA Championship. His odds are unreflective of his ability and has to be taken advantage of. The world number 8 could be in the mix on the final day. A fantastic each way bet given his odds.

Kevin Kisner: 66/1 (888Sport)

Kisner has hit form at the right time. Winning the DEAN & DELUCA was followed with a T-6 at the Memorial. If form is what you are looking then Kisner is hot and more importantly at great odds.

Francesco Molinari: 100/1 (BetStars)

For those who like triple number odds, Molinari is a strong bet. He has crept up the world rankings almost unnoticed. He is currently second on the PGA stats for Driving accuracy and fourth in terms of tee–to–green. His only issue is putting but if that gets hot then Molinari could be a real dark horse.

Graeme McDowell:  200/1 (Unibet)

McDowell has one of the best percentages for driving accuracy this year. 69.61 of his tee shots have landed firmly on the fairway. This stat alone ranks him at number nine in the Driving Accuracy stats. He’ll need to produce another strong showing off the tee to avoid the dangers of Erin Hill. As the 2010 U.S Open Champion, he knows what it takes to win one of the most difficult majors out there.
