Jordan Spieth off to a flyer at the Travelers

As he shoots a 63

Jordan Spieth was making his debut at the TPC River Highlands Course in Connecticut, and he made light work on day one, with eight birdies and a solitary bogey to take a one–shot lead at the Travelers Championship with a 7 under 63.

Jordan was hot from the get–go, as he birdied five of the first of eight holes. But it was not until the 18th that he could finally claim the lead, as he birdied the par 4 having hit a wdge to 4 feet.

“Being 3 under through four it helps you walk a little easier, it helps kind of the shots you are playing throughout the round,” Spieth said. “You don’t feel like you have to take as many chances and I was able to play away from pins when I was in a little bit of trouble.”

Johnson Wagner and Brett Stegmaier are a shot behind Jordan, having posted 64's, and it was a good day for Padraig Harrington as he returned from an injury, which was the result of being hit by someone he was coaching, with a 66 to go into day 2 T7.

Meanwhile Rory McIlroy shot a 3 under 67, and is back T20. But it is early days for Rory, who was also making his debut on the course. He just needs more game–time to get back to where he needs to be.

Paul Casey is one shot back from Rors, but it is already looking like Luke Donald won't be making it to the weekend unless he can find some form today. He shot a +3 73, against a projected cut–line of –1.
