Darren Gough – Ashes To Slashes
Yorkshireman and ex-England pacer gives us the low down on his best and worst golfing moments.
What’s your best moment in golf?
Hole-in-one at a 280 yard par four in 2006 ! It was my first year back at Yorkshire. There’s a plaque up at the golf club where I did it. Never done it on a par three...yet.
Your most despairing moment?
The Dunhill, 2002. I was playing off 18 and wasn’t good enough to be playing in that tournament. I hit the biggest drives, but then kept topping my wedges. Big crowds watching… I just wanted the floor to open up and swallow me.
Have you ever lost your temper playing golf?
I’m not an aggressive golfer I wouldn’t say, but I’d been given these rental clubs in Australia, and the driver had a real whip on it. Not good for my power fade! I bent it jokingly, and it snapped.
What winds you up most about golf?
Bandits! Every sportsman I play against is off 18. They don’t have a membership anywhere, so they just say “18”. Then they beat you by10 shots. I can’t let it go, I have to belittle them for the next three hours.
What’s the strangest place you’ve ever practiced your golf swing?
On the cricket pitch plenty of times. When we’re bored and don’t touch the ball for half an hour… and on the rehearsals at Strictly Come Dancing. You find yourselves doing these stupid things all the time, wherever you are.
