Young Scot claims England North Boys Championship

Exciting Scottish talent, Cameron Adam, continued his fine form in 2020 with a dominant display in the Faldo Series England North Boys Championship at St Annes Old Links Golf Club.

On Monday, the penultimate Faldo Series Europe qualifying event of the year commenced, as 138 elite junior golfers faced unpredictable weather and testing conditions at the highly respected St Annes Old Links Golf Club. Due to the conditions, play was suspended on the second day, reducing the tournament to just 36-holes.
Despite the weather, St Annes Old Links provided a high-class venue for the latest Series event, a course that is consistently seen in respected rankings lists and a qualifying venue for The Open Championship.
The tournament’s Overall Champion, Cameron Adam, will make it a three-peat of Faldo Series Europe Grand Finals following his invites to the 2017, 2018 and now 2020 tournaments. The high-flying Scotsman showed great composure following the second day rain postponement to match his opening round, 68, with an equally impressive 68 to take the win by 3 shots. A seasoned Faldo Series competitor, Adam, had already shown great form this season, placing third at the opening qualifier at Brocket Hall and will look to carry his form into the Grand Final to better his best position of 4th in the U16s category back in 2017.

Following his win Faldo Series England North Boys Champion, Cameron Adam said: – “‘With the conditions as they were my aim was to play very strategically.  Off the tee I used my driving 1-iron a lot to put me in position, keeping it on the fairways was at a premium.  From there I was able to hit the greens, only missing 3 greens in regulation over the two days. I felt comfortable for the final round, I knew with the two par 5’s to finish I needed to finish strong.  Having the Faldo Series App really helped so I could see what everyone was doing around me.  Hopefully, I can string three rounds together at the Grand Final and make something special happen.”
Elsewhere, Jamie Van Wyk shot 5-under par to claim the U21s category following a confident display that left him the sole under par score in the category. Whilst fellow English golfer, Sam Easterbrook proved a tough competitor as he recovered from a misfiring opening round, with a 68 on his second time of asking to take home the U16s category by two shots finishing his efforts level par.
After the event had concluded, Faldo Series Director, Matthew Faldo, said: “It is always great to return to the North and with the wild conditions it proved quite a test for players out on the exposed links. Despite the bad weather, the course looked in exceptional condition and its ability to recover really is a testament to all the team here at St Annes Old Links.
“Congratulations to Cameron who has proved to be a real force over the years in the Series, and we look forward to seeing him back in action at our Grand Final. Also, to both Jamie and Sam, who fought well to post some very respectable scores over the two days, and we are excited to see them at the Grand Final too.”
The Faldo Series team and St Annes Old Links Golf Club staff went above and beyond to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all players and staff at the event remained uncompromised, with sanitisation stations, social distancing and reduced touchpoints implemented and signed throughout the event. Players continued to use the Faldo Series app to complete all scoring.
The Series takes a short break and will return on the 12th October at Ladybank Golf Club to host the rescheduled Scotland Girls and Boys Championship, concluding what has been a thrilling season of qualifiers for the Europe schedule since returning after lockdown.
