Tiger Wood's tournament struggles to find title sponsor

As perfect storm descends

Word on the street is that Tiger Wood’s tournament is struggling to find a new sponsor.

According to CSN’s Mid–Atlantic reporter JP Finlay, the event, which is normally played in the Washington D.C. area, remains without a title sponsor, and won’t be held at Congressional County Club in 2018 and 2020 as was originally intended.

AT&T sponsored Woods’s event for seven years, before Quicken Loans took over the title sponsorship in 2014.

President of Congressional, Richard Sullivan Jr., broke the news to members in a letter, writing, "The Tiger Woods Foundation currently has no title sponsor for their PGA Tour golf tournament. Because of that circumstance, the PGA Tour has exercised its right to terminate our facilities agreement with them for 2018 and 2020, while they seek a title sponsor for The National."

Tiger’s agent, Mark Steinberg, told the Washington Post that they were still looking for a new title sponsor, and were intent on continuing with the event.

"The event, at this point, is not going away. I want to be clear about that," Steinberg said. "We are looking for a title sponsor in the D.C. area. Where that event would be played is still up in the air. We don't know the answer to that. We have to work on the economics and finances. But we're actively looking, and we have a number of good leads and sponsors and are talking to them daily."

Tiger hasn’t actually played in his own tournament since 2015, and there are also increasingly timing issues around his event, which normally falls between the US Open and The Open.

As more US players travel to the Irish and Scottish Opens, the quality of the field will be under pressure, which will in turn make it harder to attract a sponsor.

Rory’s work on the Irish Open has really started to pay off, and both the Irish and Scottish Open now have much bigger prize-funds as they have become part of the Rolex Series, which guarantees a $7 million purse.

And there is also Tiger’s reputation to consider. This could be a perfect storm for the future of the event.
