Rory Makes Ace In Masters Practice Round!

Hole in one on 16 from 170 yards

Worms-eye view

The crowd Roaryed (Really-Ed) yesterday at Augusta, as Rory McIlroy made an ace on the 16th. Playing against Chris Wood in his warm up round Rory slotted home with a seven iron from 170 yards, and closed out his match 3 & 2.

"I don't think I have ever heard a roar that large in a practice round.  It was great.  It was a nice practice round and a bit of a highlight and it ended the match as well.”

Being the Masters though we can't find any footage of it anywhere. People really are too scared to use their phones when they aren't meant to at Augusta National.

Wood said this about the ace. ”I've never quite heard a noise like it - it was pretty mad. It was great fun. It was a cool moment.”

Wood could have still halved the hole and kept the match alive. All he needed to do was match the ace… "I suppose it wasn't quite game over but when the crowd are chanting 'Rory, Rory' and you've got to try and hit a seven iron to that flag there's not much chance.”

The look of a winner

Rory and Chris Wood were taking the game seriously though, playing a proper match and not hitting multiple tee shots to get a feel for different spots on the green. Rory had this to say. ”I played well. I feel like my game is in good shape. We both hit just one ball. It gets me into a nice mindset of this is how I'm going to play, so I'm going to try to do the same tomorrow, play 18 and a match with someone.”

"I feel that's the best way for me to prepare. It's competitive. You're trying to shoot a score. The pins aren't in the spots where they are going to be at the weekend, but at the same time you still have to get the ball in the hole and hole putts that you feel a little bit of pressure on."

With Rory skipping the par three contest this year he’s taking the Masters seriously as he tries to complete the grand slam (no shit Sherlock - Ed). His game is made for this course. Everyone keeps saying he’s the only one of the top guys in the world not to win this year, but he has been competing and we reckon he’s just been biding his time until he can win the one with that green jacket that matters the most to him.
