Kyle Stanley wins Quicken Loans National

As he beats Charles Howell III in a playoff

America’s Kyle Stanley won the Quicken Loans National as he beat Charles Howell III in a playoff, and took home a cheque for $1.3 million for his troubles.

Both players were four shots off the lead going into the final day, and when they both carded four–under–rounds of 66 they found themselves tied at the top at seven under.

Howell almost grabbed out and out victory on the 18th, when his 20–foot putt missed by an inch, but it was to be Stanley’s day, as he won it outright on the first playoff hole by successfully getting up and down on the 18th hole.

It was his first victory to on tour since the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open. It was also very much worth the wait as he took home a cheque for $1.3 million.

Rickie Fowler won’t have been disappointed with his weekend’s work, as he came in T3 with Scotland’s Martin Laird, two shots behind the leaders through 18.

He dropped a shot on the fourth, but then had 4 birdies to make the turn in 32. He shot a further 5 birdies on the back nine to make it nine in total, but dropped a shot on the 11th, and then had a double bogey on the par 4 fourteenth when he found water off the tee.

Sweden’s David Lingmerth had been the leader at the 54–hole mark, but could only muster a 73 to finish T5. It really was a tournament of two halves for him as he shot 65, 65, 73, 73.

The win sees Stanley earn one of four qualification spots for The British Open later this month, with the other three spots for Royal Birkdale going to Howell III, Laird and Sung Kang.
