Italian Open Day 3

Kaymer takes pole position at Monza

Our psychic ball must be working as Martin Kaymer raced to the top of the leaderboard at Monza at the Italian Open. His third round 65 took him into a share of the lead with Frenchman Romain Wattel and and overnight leader Jens Fahrbring.

Kaymer has had a rough time since his dominant victory at last year's US Open started his round with four straight birdies. Despite his awesome round he was disappointed with his finish.

"I started off well," said Kaymer. "But those last three holes I think I left a couple out there especially on 16 and 17, they were good putts they just didn't go in. Sixteen was a very, very poor chip but that's okay, seven under par is a very good round.

"I've placed myself in a very good position for Sunday, and I am looking forward to it. It will be a challenge to myself and a challenge to beat my opponents. I am up there with a chance to win on Sunday and that's all you want at the end of the day.

"It's important that you don't look too far ahead and start to think about what could happen. You also don't want to rush into an aggressive mode too soon. You have to also enjoy the day and I think I have enough experience of being in this position to enjoy it."

We noticed Kaymer had been playing the new TaylorMade M1 driver. Who says new equipment can't make a difference?

Fahrbring had the outright lead until a final hole bogey. Wattel stormed through the field with a birdie on 13, eagle in 14, and two more birdies at 16 and 17.

Bernd Wiesberger shot a bogeyless 67 to get to 15 under, while the Belgian Bomber Nicky C shot a second successive 70, leaving him four back from the leaders at 13 under. With 15 players within five of the lead, and low rounds possible around the Parco Reale course, tomorrow's winner is far from a forgone conclusion.
