Watson beats Casey to Travelers Championship win
Words: Daniel Owen
Bubba Watson won the Travelers Championship beating GolfPunk, and England’s very own Paul Casey in a sudden death playoff. A birdie on the second extra hole nailed the win for Bubba Watson, for his 8th PGA Tour Title, and his second Travelers Championship having won there in 2010.
Casey shot a 65 at the TPC River Highlands course in Connecticut to race up to the top of the leaderboard, and the Arizona based professional played the shot of the day on the third, an incredible one hop eagle two to get him within two shots of the lead.
Watson had lead the tournament with two to play, but bogied 17 and could only par the last to force a playoff. Once there Watson was cool as ice running in a 12 footer for birdie on the second extra hole to beat Casey who had hit a flyer out of a green side bunker. Casey took it on the chin however, and considering his drop in form after injuries, it’s great to see him bounce back and perform on the PGA Tour.
“I've won enough around the world to know what winning feels like, I also know what coming in second feels like. I've done that a lot. My little boy is right behind you, 20 yards away sucking his finger, so I look at him, and it kind of makes everything pale in comparison.”
"Casey played great," said Watson, 36, ”I hung on and that's what we have to do sometimes to win.” “I proved to myself in '10 that I could win under pressure in the playoff; I proved to myself that I could mess up 17 and still have a chance to win, and so I knew that if I just kept my head down and kept doing what I needed to do, I could still have a chance to win, and that's what I did”
