French golfing icon Jean van de Velde to play

In the Farmfoods European Senior Masters

With this year’s Farmfoods European Senior Masters just around the corner, yet another high-profile professional has now been added to the stellar line-up. French star Jean van de Velde will be going for his first Staysure Tour win at the event, which takes place at Warwickshire’s Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club.

The four-day event takes place between 4–7 October and Jean will be joined on the course by a whole host of legendary golfing icons including 1991 Masters winner Ian Woosnam OBE, and 1993 Ryder Cup star Peter Baker.

Jean’s extremely successful career has seen him represent Europe in the Ryder Cup and win two European Tour events but he is perhaps best known for his performance in the 1999 Open Championship. Coming runner-up in the event, at one stage it looked like Jean would become the first Frenchman to win a Major since 1907. However, he eventually fell short after Paul Lawrie was victorious in a play-off. Despite this, the image of Jean walking through the water looking for his ball has gone on to become one of the most iconic in the tournament’s history.

One of France’s greatest ever golfers, in 2012 he was named as one of the country’s UNICEF ambassadors, only the second sportsmen in the country to achieve this title.

Event host, Peter Baker, explained why he is delighted to have Jean on board for the event. He said: “Jean is a big name in European golf, so we are thrilled to welcome him to this year’s event. He has played in some of the biggest tournaments in the sport and is considered one of France’s greatest golfers so we cannot wait to see him in action during the event.”

The year’s Farmfoods European Senior Masters takes place between 4-7 October. There are limited playing opportunities still available and fans can register for free tickets by visiting: https://europeanseniormasters.com/.
