Football and Golf meet at Cheltenham

Shearer and Westwood both have shares in Augusta Kate

Alan Shearer and Lee Westwood joined their fellow owners with runners in the parade ring before the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at Cheltenham on Wednesday.

Former England Captain Shearer, and Westwood were at Cheltenham to watch their five-year-old mare Augusta Kate run.

The television presenters Ant and Dec, who also have shares in a syndicate formed by the leading owner Graham Wylie, could not make it to Cheltenham due to work commitments.

We know Ant and Dec are already mates with Shearer and Westwood, as they have played together at the BMW Pro-am.

Shearer told an interviewer before Wednesday’s race that it was all about the experience. “We will have a great day whatever happens,” he said. “We never expected to have one of the fancied runners in a race at the Cheltenham Festival. If the best happens, I might not come home on Wednesday night.”

The punters were also paying attention, and as the race started Augusta Kate was the 7-2 favourite. Sadly, it was not to be their winning day, as Augusta Kate could only finish in seventh, and was beaten by five lengths.
