Dunhill Cup Day 2

The Wrap

Jimmy Mullen leads.

Day 2 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was another fun and enthralling watch as the young guns continued firing despite the pressure increasing on them with mounting publicity from the media.

Leading on his own for the first time as a Professional is the Englishman Jimmy Mullen. He had a far from steady round on The Old Course. However he did manage to weather some windy conditions on his way to firing a second round 69.

An initial bogey on the fourth hole left fears that his challenge would be diminishing slightly earlier than expected, but his flair and passion for the game at such a young age really shone through as he fought back to post a three under par round on the day.

“There were a lot of chances out there, especially when the wind dropped a bit. Earlier on when it was quite cool the ball  wasn’t going very far and then it warmed up which enabled me to hit it closer to the pins.”

Paul Dunne back at St Andrews.

In second place there is a four-way tie most notably another young newly turned professional in Paul Dunne. Dunne won the hearts of thousands of watchers, as he almost became the first amateur to win a major title in many years at St Andrews.

His title challenge faltered very early on in his final round and unfortunately he wasn’t able to recover it. He started in much brighter fashion on his return to St Andrews, as he made a birdie down the first and mixed two more on the fifth and tenth hole in with one bogey on the fourth to shoot a round of two under par.

Jamie Donaldson showing the way.

Jamie Donaldson is also in tied second place after his superb round of 65 around Kingsbarns on Friday. He had just the single bogey on his card after making a mess of the fifth. With eight birdies it seems Jamie was really in the mood to impress Amateur partner Brian Higgins. After not doing much of note since securing the Ryder Cup for Europe back in 2014 maybe this is going to be the week the Welshman leaps back into form.

Bradley Dredge fired the low round of the week so far with a 63 around Kingsbarns. The Welshman shot 5 birdies and two eagles in a perfect performance to sit alongside Martin Kaymer at nine under par. "I've been playing golf a long time and haven't got a clue anymore," he joked when asked about his peculiar form.

The German Kaymer looked in imperious form as he put together a round of four under par at Kingsbarns. His round did include two disappointing bogeys on the second and ninth hole but he finished strongly on his back nine coming in for just 32 shots.

It’s clear Eddie Pepperell may not like the influence Cricket Badboy Kevin Pieterson is having on his game, as he collapsed to a round of nine over par at the treacherous Carnoustie on Friday.

All Star English Pairing of Tim Henman and Danny Willett were hoping for an improved day after being 2 over after round one and Improve Willett did as he shot a round of four under at Kingsbarns to move to two under par for the Championship.

With the weekend now upon us, this tournament still has fans enthralled with action from professionals, Amateurs and even our favorite movie stars. Round 3 is sure to have plenty of twists and turns on what should be, moving day for all golfers alike.
