Crazy golf in Saltburn

Councillors need to get a life - seriously

Plans for a 10 hole mini-golf course on Saltburn’s lower promenade have come unstuck, because parish councillors fear people may be hit by flying balls struck by over-enthusiastic putters.

But the scheme may yet put Saltburn on the nation’s mini-golf map, as it’s the borough council, which has the final say. CNS Leisure Ltd wants to construct the 370 square metre putting course on land next to the pier.

It would be staffed by one full-time and two part-time employees, have a perimeter wall and be monitored by CCTV erected on a nearby toilet block.

Councillors are recommending the plan is rejected due to it being an “inappropriate site and possible danger to the public.”

Councillor Jim Wingham, who chaired the meeting, said: “Councillors were worried that passers-by might be hit by flying golf balls, with it being a 2m wall and so close to the promenade.

“They also felt it wasn’t in keeping with Saltburn’s Victorian heritage, it could cause congestion on the promenade and there were concerns over children being filmed on CCTV.”

The parish recommendation has now been submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Council, whose regulatory committee will make the final decision.

The proposed course’s 10 holes have a largely seaside theme, with obstacles including rocks, a 6ft surf board and models of a beach hut (6ft 6ins) and a lighthouse (4.25ft).

We love a bit of crazy golf. Why does it have to be so bleeding difficult to get planning for a 370 square meter seaside crazy golf club? Elf and safety madness we think.
