Badgers destroy golf course

As owners live in fear of their return

A father and son who recently took over a golf course in Lincolnshire are “living in fear” of badgers who have been causing chaos with the course.

Kayne McMillan and his fathr Russell moved to the county from London early last year to run Horncastle Golf Club.

But the pair have been left “heartbroken” after badgers rolled up the grass “like a carpet” leaving the course in a “terrible state” and resulting in one hole being closed off altogether.

Kayne, 22, told Lincolnshire Live: “We are new to the business and started getting the course looking really good and people were praising it.”

It was in September last year that they discovered crows were starting to scratch up the course before badgers took over and “completely destroyed” it.

“It broke our hearts,” he said. “We are new to the business trying to make money and make a better future for our children.

“All the hard work put in was destroyed. We lost 30 members because of it and people weren’t coming to play here.”

And there is nothing they can do to prevent it from happening again says Kaybe as the chemical previously used to stop pests was banned.

“We had to let nature take its course and it took several months to get it back. It’s still not perfect and has left the course bumpy,” said Kayne.

“The badgers are causing chaos. We’re praying it doesn’t happen again this year.”

“It’s supposed to be exciting times but it’s coming up to September and we are living in fear.

“We’re really worried they’re going to come back.”
