Attempts to move US Women's Open

Foiled by Trump's threat of legal action

President Trump's New Jersey based golf course was selected to host this years U.S. Women's Open back in 2012. At the time, this didn't seem to cause much contention. He was just a rich, powerful, reality–TV star who happened to own a beautiful course. However, as his political standing rose, multiple calls for the tournament to be stripped away from Trump also increased.

The requests were swept aside by the USGA and this week July 13th - 18th sees Trump National Golf Club hosting the defining event in women's golf.

There are now claims emerging that the President threatened to personnally sue the USGA, should the event be moved.

USA Today's, Christine Brennan reported that an anonymous source had recalled a conference call that contained the supposed legal threat. This was said to have taken place two years prior to Trump's announcement of running for Presidency.

Brennan writes: Davis, who told the group he and other USGA officials had met with Trump, told the executive committee, “We can’t get out of this. He’s going to sue us”, according to the person.

When the attempts to move the event failed, the USGA chose to remain silent about any notion of moving The Open, as well as not responsing to calls urging them to reconsider their acceptance on the matter.

However, two weeks before last years Presidential Election, a letter was written asking for the tournament to be relocated once again. The letter was sent by Democratic senators, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania.

The letter referred to the then recently leaked tape from Access Hollywood regarding Trump's gloating of sexually assaulting women with impunity. The President was said to have shown a “pattern of degrading and dehumanizing women”. The senators felt these reports were enough to finally see the event moved, as a Trump owned course was no place to hold a major women's golfing tournament.

However, President Trumps alleged threat of a law suit still proved enough to retain the decision of hosting this prestigious event at his Beddington course.

Now this week we are seeing the world's best female golfer's compete for the Harton S. Semple trophy at his New Jersey course.

Trump visited the course on Friday, and he's expected again today for the third round. He clearly wasn't going to miss this one!
