He needs a win to secure the Race To Dubai title, but Tommy Fleetwood's stellar year looks in danger of fizzling out as he struggles to make an impact in Sun City.
Bernd Wiesberger shot a -5 67 to take a one-shot lead over Scott Jamieson, American Julian Suri, South Africa's Branden Grace and Victor Dubuisson.
Graeme Storm is -3, alongside former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.
"It wasn't easy. to be honest," said Wiesberger, who won the Shenzhen International in April. "It was quite breezy, quite steady direction-wise but still the course is quite tricky off the tees. But I played all right."
