Where's David Feherty Heading Next?

Here's the skinny, so far.

David Feherty’s sudden departure from CBS has come as a bit of a surprise to us all down at GolfPunk Towers. We’re not happy about it, so we wanted to understand what was going on, and what could be next for him. Here’s what we found.

19 years was how long David Feherty worked for CBS. But that’s all down the tubes now. It seems that his most likely move will be to NBC and their Golf Channel, although no one is commenting, including Feherty’s agent Andrew Elkin.

According to industry insiders, the Feherty issue is only going to intensify the battle between Fox Sports and NBC, who own the Golf Channel. NBC lost the USGA contract to Fox, which is a newcomer to the game. We also understand that Feherty wanted a booth job, rather than roaming the fairways, but Nick Faldo and Jim Nantz already have that slot.

Fox would seem to be a natural fit for Feherty, as the channel thrives on the type of controversy that only Feherty can deliver in golf.

The key problem is that Fox really doesn’t have much in the way of rights, as it only has the USGA, which includes the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women’s Open and the U.S. Amateur. That’s not enough to get Feherty's fangs stuck into.

NBC’s lead man is Johnny Miller, and there is talk that he might, at the age of 68, want to trim down his schedule. But, again, industry sources are saying that David Duval is been groomed for that job. So if Feherty were to join them, then it would be for another boots on the ground job, which he doesn’t seem to want.

So will that mean Fox get their man? We don’t know, but we are going to keep our ears to the ground for sure.
