Maverick McNealy's Dilemma

Turn pro or no?

Three years in at Stanford, and Maverick McNealy is America’s most highly rated professional golf prospect. So when is going to turn Pro?

This is the question that follows McNealy around, and is asked by just about everyone who has seen him play. But McNealy is having none of it and always offers a polite correction: it is a matter of if, not when.

With less than a year to graduation, McNealy has said he is seriously considering not turning pro, and instead pursuing a career in business.

McNealy is the winner of Haskins Awards, which has been presented to the best US collegiate male golfer since 1971. Every single winner has turned pro, which puts his decision into context.

And here are some of the names: Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Hunter Mahan, BIll Haas and Phil Mickelson. Put those in your pipe!

Since 1990 alone, the recipients have gone on to earn more than $600 million in prize money and millions in endorsements.

It is an extraordinary decision to make given his undoubted level of talent. But if that’s what makes him happy, so be it, and it certainly makes him live up to his name.
