Cobra King F6+ Driver: Exclusive First Hit

It's a doozy!!!

£299

The King Cobra was a phenomenal success back in the 90’s. Their drivers were used by Greg Norman who is arguably the best driver of the ball ever, and Tiger Woods when he drove the ball like no one had ever done before him, to romp the 1997 Masters. It’s fair to say it’s one of the most iconic models ever. So Cobra needed to make sure that when they brought it back  the clubs were worthy of the name. And we think they have.

The King LTD driver is the ultimate in high launch and low spin. But that isn’t necessarily  for everyone. Some people need a lower launch, or more spin for example.

Enter the Cobra King F6+. Last year The Cobra Fly Z + introduced flip zone weighting, so you could adjust the centre of gravity with the weight at the front for low spin, or the back for more forgiveness. This year they’ve updated it with more adjustability from the front to the back using a CarbonTrac system. By making the track the adjustable weight slides on, out of carbon fibre, they’ve saved a load of weight that they can put into the movable weight. This lowers the centre of gravity, and gives even more room for adjustment as there are now 18 grams of weight to move in the head.

The King F6+ also features Cobra staples such as a carbon crown to save weight, the Forged E9 Zone face tech and the Speed Channel on the face to maximise ball speeds on miss hits, and the MyFly and SmartPad tech that allows for adjustability from 9 degrees up to 12, plus three draw settings. A F6+ Pro is also available, this one is adjustable from 7-10 degrees and has fade rather than draw settings.

Like most Cobra woods, it’s available in a collection of colours, this time, glass black, blue aster, and white pearl. They all look good, but the white with the textured crown looks just phenomenal.
The stock shaft is a Matrix Ozik Black Tie weighing in at 65 grams.

We got to hit this compared to the King LTD, and for us the results were even better with the F6+. I couldn’t spin the King LTD enough for my swing speed, whereas the F6+ with the weight towards the back was giving me really strong consistent results. With some shaft tweaking I was 5 yards longer than the LTD every time. Feel is powerful. It’s not a soft feeling driver like the LTD, it has a sharper more powerful sounding crack at impact, while still not being obnoxiously loud.

One thing Cobra have done is make these drivers forgiving. Sounds obvious, some recent drivers have had a really low MOI in search of the longest drives on centre hits. Cobra have tweaked their centre of gravity so they are lower than the most of the opposition, yet without lowering MOI. These truly are low spin and forgiving. This will be a game changer for some golfers, and will make their miss hits longer AND straighter.

Key for us is the adjustability. Our swings change throughout the year as do course conditions. With the adjustability on offer here you can raise the launch and spin for a cold day when you need to get the ball in the air, but lower the loft and put the weight forward if you’re playing a blustery day on a seaside links. The system is very easy to use and intuitive, not always the case with some drivers out there.

And at £299 it massively undercuts some of the other adjustable drivers out there. We think Cobra have got their best full line of equipment for years, and this driver might be the best in their range for the widest amount of golfers.

Available January 29th.
