Team USA opened with their most significant lead after day one of a Ryder Cup against Europe by winning both of Friday's sessions 3-1 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. The last time a team earned 3 or more points in each of the first two sessions was in 2004, when Team Europe went 3½-½, 3-1 at Oakland Hills on its way to a 18½ -9½ victory on foreign soil.

Chasing them are Englishman Justin Rose, South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who both carded 69, and India’s Shubhankar Sharma who had one of the round of the day, a six-under 66.

The race to become European Number One became a two horse today in Dubai. With Shane Lowry already feeling the heat on day one, Justin Rose had a slim chance of challenging Rory McIlroy and Danny Willett for the coveted position. However, Rose wilted in the heat of Dubai carding a 78 that leaves him in T48th position. Bogies on 4, 6, 8 and 10 plus double bogies on 12 and 17 has seen the Englishman hopes all but evaporate.

And there was also the question of would he pick up $800,000? The Dunhill Cup is one of the biggest purses on the European Tour, with a total prize fund of $5,000,000.

It didn’t rain (that much) today, and the crowds came out in their droves. Who says the young guns aren’t already making a difference? They came to see Jordan, and he did not disappoint. In the end he won comfortably with a two under 69 to beat Henrik Stenson by four shots.
