McIlroy calls for Padraig Harrington as next Ryder Cup captain

Whistling Straits won't know what's hit it!

Padraig for 2020 Captain, yay!!! That's what Rory is calling for. And why not? Three-time major winner (including two USPGAs) Padraig would be a great choice to take the lads out to Whistling Straits.

He's been a vice-captain, including as part of Thomas Bjorn's team in Paris and his impact on the team has clearly been a positive one.

"I've always thought Padraig would be a good captain in the United States," said Rory. "Padraig's won a lot of golf tournaments over there. He's won a PGA Championship. I think the continuity in the European camp having all these vice-captains this year and preparing for captaincy down the road has been a huge foundation of why we've been so good."

Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke have captained two of Europe's last three teams.

But what does Padraig himself think?

"I wouldn't do it without a certain trepidation because it's not easy, it really isn't easy. It's a tough, tough job," Harrington told Irish broadcaster RTE. "But on balance yes, I want to be a Ryder Cup captain at some stage."

Harrington, 47, has played in six Ryder Cup teams including the victories in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010.
