Rory withdraws from Memorial

Could be in doubt for US Open

Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from next week's Memorial Tournament in Ohio, leading to fears that he might miss next month's US Open.

The Memorial was to be McIlroy's final event before the second Major of the year, but he has had to pull out due to his rib injury.

Rory has already missed this week’s BMW PGA Championship, and if he does play at Erin Hills in three weeks' time then it will be his first competitive round since the Players Championship.

McIlroy's agent Sean O'Flaherty said the decision to withdraw was made to allow McIlroy as much time as possible to recover for the US Open.

There is still one chance for McIlroy to play before the US Open if he makes an unlikely appearance at the FedEx St Jude Classic in two weeks.
