Caught short college girls penalised

When you've got to go....

Let's face it, we've all been caught short (sided) on the golf course. But it's no way to rack up a penalty...

When Armitage Shanks calls and you're on the golf course, there's not much you can do about it. You just gotta go. But be warned, if you do need to go and you're playing a tournament, do not go by buggy... Just ask Sarah Cho and Kelly Nielsen who were competing in the NCAA Women's Championship.

A golf ball masquerading as a toilet yesterday...

Both players were hit with two-stroke penalties after they took cart rides to the lavatory during their rounds Golfweek reports. Neither player said she they were aware that they were breaking any rule as the went about spending their pennies. But they had inadvertently broken the rule that states players “must not ride on any form of transportation during a stipulated round unless authorized.” Including going to the lav.

"That was my bad,” Cho said. “Of course I feel really bad because it’s a dumb two-stroke penalty, something I could have controlled.”

Sarah Cho in happier, less desperate times...

You can see how the confusion came about as players had been authorized to take carts to speed up play on the long treks from the third to the fourth tee, ninth to the 10th tee and 11th to the 12th tee. However, Cho, who took the cart in order to avoid holding up her group from teeing off on the next hole, was not technically authorized to use a cart to spend the penny.

Nielsen suffered the same fate after getting a ride from a Kent State staffer to find the facilities coming off the 13th green.

Cho's Northwestern coach Emily Fletcher said this: “I pretty much knew all day long we were two shots higher [than the scoreboard showed]."

However, Fletcher kept the situation from her charge as she didn't want to put her off. Eventually she carded a 75 instead of a 73.Ironically there were several portable bathrooms near the 18th green Cho could have used that would have avoided the infraction (where is this actually going?! – Ed).

Fortunately neither player's penalties cost their team too much as Northwestern took a 36 hole lead. And no, we're not going to tell you how it eventually turns out.
