Si–Woo Kim faces call up dilemma

As he must do military service

Si–Woo Kim was a surprise victor at the Players Championship last weekend when he became the tournament’s youngest ever winner, but the 21–year-old now has another challenge to face.

Like all able–bodied men between the ages of 18 and 35, Si–Woo Kim must complete 21 months of national service, as South Korea is still technically at war with its truculent neighbours North Korea.

Asked in a post round press conference if he could expect any form of exemption he said:

“I really wish we could have that benefit. However, regardless of me winning this tournament, I really have to go to the military service, and I've already decided I'm going to go, too, so I'm ready for that.

“I haven't decided yet [when it will be], but I have five years of exemption, so we will see.”

There is still one possible route, out and that is by finishing in the top three in the Olympics, which will be held in Tokyo in three years time. But that’s a pretty tall order in itself, despite the coolness under pressure that he displayed down the stretch on Sunday.

At least he has a bit of time on his side, as it would be a shame to see him lose momentum so early on in his career.

Si–Woo Kim is not the only South Korean to have faced this issue, as Bae Sang–moon, who won his maiden tour event at the 2013 Byron Nelson Championships, was in a similar boat.

In July 2015, a South Korean court ruled Bae must fulfil his military requirement, and he is now doing his time.

The PGA Tour did, however, create a "Mandatory Obligation" category that will allow Bae to retain his exemption after completing his military service.
