Rory McIlroy claims the Masters is biggest tournament in the world

Put that in your pipe R&A

The R&A won't like this, but Rory McIlroy has gone on the  record to state that he believes that the Masters has now overtaken the other major championships as "the biggest golf tournament in the world".

Rory will be playing his first tournament since the Masters when he tees it up at the Wells Fargo Championship today. And ahead of the event, he made the following comments;

"I don't care about the US Open or The Open Championship," said McIlroy.

"The most amount of eyeballs, the most amount of hype, everything is at Augusta."

He added: "For me it's the most special tournament that we play and it's the one everyone desperately wants to win, but even if I was going for my first major, it's still tough to win."

The R&A won't thank him for these remarks, but truth be told, he is probably right. Winning a green Jacket at Augusta is transformative, in a way that no other major is, and elevates a playern into a different stratosphere. Just ask Sergio, who has even named his first child Azalea, after the 13th hole.
