7 Of The Best 2017 Better Player Irons
Even good players need some help...
Words: Daniel Owen
If you watch the best players in the world, more and more of them use cavity back irons. Gone are the days when everyone uses a blade. If the best player in the world want some forgiveness, and at the moment that's Jason Day, then shouldn't you?
Luckily club manufacturers are producing irons that offer the best of both worlds. Classic looks at address, but plenty of forgiveness. So if you're a good golfer, or even a mid-handicapper who wants something a bit smaller looking, there is an iron here for you...
£130 per iron
We think this might be the best Ping Iron ever. Which is a big shout considering some of the clubs they have produced over the year.
The soft 431 steel and the elastomer insert feel super soft at impact. The faces are half as thick as the S55 they replaced, so the ball speeds off the face are high. Tungsten weights in the toe make these super forgiving, in fact from the six iron to PW they are as forgiving as the bigger i irons. We’ve got delusions of grandeur on the course, so we love a small iron that plays like a bigger more forgiving one.
Mizuno LPX 900 Tour
£120 per iron
Mizuno have switched it up this season, releasing their first JPX iron for the better player.
The Mizuno bods have designed an iron blended the best bits of the MP64, namely the feel and sound, and put them into a more forgiving design. The PowerFrame design adds forgiveness, but these have a super solid feel second to none. Where the MP-5 irons are chic and classic, these are satin, super modern and sexy looking.
Wilson FG Tour V6
Wilson irons have won more majors than any other brand in history. 61 to be exact. The know how to make irons that perform, and that look awesome.
These are their latest forged irons for the better golfer, and feature strategic tungsten weighting in the sole to raise the launch and spin. Long irons have the weight in the heel and toe for maximum forgiveness, while the mid irons have the weight in the centre to put more mass behind the ball for a better feel at impact. Not in the stores yet, these are already being played on the PG and European Tour’s.

From a brand with the most major wins of all time, to a brand that you can count their professional wins on 1 hand they’re so new to the game. But they are making a serious impact. Ryan Moore used the 0311T in his win that sealed the Ryder Cup, so it’s obvious that they are already producing clubs that are good enough for the best players in the world.
The 0311T are the smallest headed iron in the PXG range, and feature a forged body welded to a HT1770 high-strength steel for seriously fast ball speeds. The face is so thin, the only way PXG can stop it form collapsing is by filing the head with a Thermo Plastic Elastomer. It supports the face and makes the irons feel marshmallow soft at impact, while the ball travels miles in the air!
Srixon are quietly going along doing their business, making some of the best irons on the market.
The Z765 is designed for the better player, but it does features some forgivness. Forged from soft 1020 carbon steel, they heads feature a tungsten plug in the toe that moves the centre of gravity into the middle of the face. Srixon use a VT sole design on their irons. They feature more bounce at the front of the club, and less towards the rear, it allows you to hit through the turf, but helps stop you hitting fat shots. It’s hard to explain but we use it in our Cleveland wedges, and it really makes for a solid feel and more consistent ball striking.
Starting from £1,875
Bentley Golf launched this year at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. And these are not your typical irons.
Forged from S25C carbon steel, the heads are then CNC milled into their final state. Made in Japan and featuring Japanese made steel or graphite shafts these are the perfect clus if you want to stand out from the crowd. They are so custom one of the options includes visiting the Seven Dreamers shaft factory in Tokyo to have a totally bespoke set of iron shafts deigned just for you. This option would make buying a set of PXG’s seem like pocket change…
